Stranger Visions | Heather Dewey-Hagborg

In Stranger Visions the artist creates sculptures of human faces based on ge- netic material that she obtains from objects, such as chewing gum, cigarette butts, etc., that she collects from public places. The extraction of DNA from these samples allows her, via a computer program, to associate the genetic segments with certain physical traits, creating 3D models of the possible faces. Working with the remains that strangers leave behind without thinking, Dewey- Hagborg makes a call for attention with respect to the tendency towards ge- netic determinism, and the possibility of a genetic control culture.
